A Note on the Conference Title

It is precisely the disciples' full reception of Jesus' self-revelation that enables him to recognize them as friends. In John's Last Supper discourse, Jesus finally discloses himself fully, completely, and without artifice to them. Their reaction to his monologue is telling: ‘See, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!' (16:29). Now they are counted as his friends, for they have gladly received all that he revealed to them, confirming it by their faith in him: ‘Now we are sure that you know all things, and have no need that anyone should question you. By this we believe that you came forth from God.' ( 16:30 ). For the first time, they have truly entered into communion with him. From being hearers, learners and followers, they have become friends. They have entered into the mystery of his personhood, and he into theirs. Thus Jesus' final prayer for them (and all future believers) is a startling affirmation of the interpenetration of their spirits with his, and ultimately, the Father's : ‘ …that they all may be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in You, that they also may be one in us…that they may be one just as we are one… I in them and You in me; that they may be made perfect in one…' (17: 21ab, 22b, 23a).
