NewsRepresentatives of L’Arche, Faith and Light Communities from More Than 30 Countries Gather in Lviv
08.03.2008 || Ecumenical News from Ukraine || KTSLviv — Representatives of the international councils of L’Arche and Faith and Light Christian communities from various countries of the world will meet for the first time in their history in western Ukrainian Lviv. The international council of L’Arche is represented by 30 persons from 14 countries of the world, and the international council of Faith and Light is represented by 19 persons from 17 countries, including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Great Britain, Ireland, India, Canada, USA, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Brazil, Uganda, New Zealand, Philippines, and Italy, reports ZAXID.NET news agency in reference to the press service of the Lviv City Council. Khmelnytskyi— An all-Ukrainian seminar was held in the town of Krasyliv in Khmelnytskyi Region on 18-21 February 2008 on the initiative of the Head of the Ukrainian Inter-confessional Christian Mission’s Board, Fr. Hryhorii Draus (chaplain of the Roman Catholic prison ministry in Ukraine). The seminar’s objective was professional training and exchange of experience for persons conducting Christian ministry in prisons. The aim was also to promote active cooperation with Christian confessions taking into account specificities of Ukraine’s criminal system institutions and penitentiary institutions. Kyiv — A round table that brought together hierarchs, clergy, and lay member sof Ukraine's churches, representatives of social organizations and State agencies, and members of Ukraine's parliament was held on February 13th at the Ukrainian Building in Kyiv. The theme of the meeting was the experience of Christian Churches in building civil society. It organized by the Council of Christian Churches in Ukraine and the Ukrainian branch of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Read more...Sources of Tolerance Exhibit Opens in Ternopil 06.02.2008 || Ecumenical News from Ukraine || KTS ERNOPIL – Yulia Smilyanska, director of the Institute of Judaism, told about the exhibit on Sources of Tolerance in Ternopil. 24 stands, set up in the building of city public school #24, introduce the subject of tolerance and the people who have contributed to it in Ukraine. A large part of the exhibit is devoted to religious tolerance, telling of the activities of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the first half of the 20th century; of the father and son Oleksandr and Oleksii Glagolev, Orthodox priests from Kyiv; and of the well-known academic Sergii Averintzev. 10 volunteers, from the upper grades of public school #24, serve as guides for this non-profit event, which will continue until February 14th. That week, according to the Gregorian calendar, ends on January 25th, which according to the European tradition is the day of the conversion of St. Paul. The symbolism here is powerful: on that day, on the way to Damascus, Saul – one of the persecutors of Christ's disciples – saw Christ Himself and heard His voice. The inauguration of the Saint Clement Center took place at the Mohyla Academy in Kyiv on Friday, December 7th. It was followed by a blessing of the new building on Saturday December 8th, the day dedicated to Saint Clement in the Eastern Christian calendar. Present for this occasion were Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity; Archbishop Philippe of Poltava (Ukrainian Orthodox Church); the Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine, Mgr Ivan Jurkovic; professor Konstantin Sigov, director of the Saint Clement Center; and a delegation from the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, headed by Father Iwan Dacko, president of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies (which is a member of the board of the new Saint Clement Center). At this inaugration, Dr. Antoine Arjakovsky, director of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies, gave the attached speech.
